Origin of the Name

The deer was found during our daily walk February 10th, 2019 with our five (5) dogs. This particular day, after a heavy snow melt, we had to detour off our normal trail and finished our walk going through the woods. Our two GSP (German shorthaired pointers) Marshall and Tucker decided to play with what Carla decided was an upside down tree stump. We called for them but they refused to obey (which is normal) and continued playing with the upside down tree stump. Rick finally decided to walk over and he discovered a decayed carcass of a deer and then continued proceeding toward the dogs at which time he looked at the “tree stump” for a few minutes until he realized it was the head and rack of the deceased deer. When Rick picked this up, he realized that it was still in velvet and was definitely not a normal deer rack. We were unsure what to do with this find, so we called the Missouri Conservation office and they indicated that we would need to get a salvage permit and indicated that is would take extensive manpower to score. We were still unsure what to do with this find, so we called a friend and he gave us a name of a gentleman that had dealt with this kind of find before. He gently cleaned the decaying velvet off the fragile rack. We were recommended to take it to Joe Bissonnette (636-290-6403) with MidWest Whitetails taxidermy because he had experience with this kind of project. We received the finished product in November 2020 and proudly displayed it on our family room wall. In January 2021, we opened up an upland hunting preserve “73 Pointers Ranch” (the rack has 73 points but only 64 are scorable) and we had a large influx of hunters that were astonished and insisted on having their picture taken with it. Apparently, one of the hunters took it upon himself to call Missouri Show-Me Big Bucks Club and they came and spent a lot of time and effort to score this unique find. An article “Say it ain’t Doe!” was featured in North American WhiteTail Magazine in the December/January 2022 issue (page 48).
